AX860i failure query

Hi,

I have an AX860i which has been in a new system for around 3 months, faultless for that time until yesterday when it 'popped' quite loudly and died. There was no smell of burning or any other visible damage when I removed the unit from my PC later but it did blow the fuse on the mains plug and also tripped the circuit breaker on my house wiring and UPS. The PSU power switch is also now stuck in the 'on' position.

Fortunately there appears to be no damage to any components in my system (one of the reasons I bought a well specified PSU), checked today by installing an older HX850 which has given me no problems in the 5 years I've had it.

The unit is being RMA'd but I'm just curious if this is a normal failure mode? I purchased Corsair as a top quality brand and I can't see any external reason why the PSU would have blown as my UPS and all the other equipment connected is fine - I guess this is just bad luck. I did notice during the time that it was working that it always made a 'ping' sound on shutting down my PC, which I wasn't use to with other PSUs I've owned.

Anyway, I'm happy with the RMA and have actually bought a new AX860i to go in another system which I'll use now so I'm not without my main system for long. I just wondered if any of the tech experts here have any comments.

Thanks
