H80i not detected - USB issue

I had intended to report this problem on here and hopefully get a quick solution (yeah right)....

As it turns out, it looks like I'm suffering from an issue here that is well-known and goes back ages.

I purchased and installed a Corsair H80i, got it up and running and everything seemed fine until I installed Corsair Link. No detection of any H80i, nada. Zip.

Doing a bit of research, and a bit of troubleshooting, it appears that this is the 'Device not recognised' error - for whatever reason, the USB dongle drivers aren't working properly. I'm stuck with an unrecognised device in the Devices and Drivers page, a cooler running it's fans at around (i believe) ~3500 rpm, and no apparent method of fixing it. The sole thing I haven't tried is trying to plug it into new USB ports on my mobo, which I can't really do as a) the others are harder to access and b) I shouldn't really be doing that just to get some flakey drivers working.

Judging from the threads on this forum, this problem goes back years, and I'm extremely annoyed I chose a Corsair cooler. I haven't heard back yet from my tech support ticket but it doesn't look like anything can be done regardless.

The only hopeful indicator I've seen is the youtube 'how to get Link running on 8.1' video, which is more or less the same symptoms I'm having except on Windows 7 64 bit. I doubt it would be that easy.

What are the options in this situation? Is there any realistic chance of these drivers being sorted out, considering this USB dongle is the sole way to control the fan speed?. It seems rather nuts where such a critical problem just hasn't been addressed.

Another slightly unorthodox fix could be to buy those Noctua silent fans I was wanting, and hope the noise goes down sufficient for me to use my PC... but I've no idea what would happen if I stuck lower RPM fans on the cooler, and I'm not sure how good an idea it is to have expensive fans running on max all the time.

Or is the answer to just return/RMA it? Are there CPU coolers out there that don't use a usb dongle interface?
